Updated: Jul 27, 2020

The most heavenly escape to Clear Lake - the largest natural freshwater lake entirely within the state.

Airbnb Rating: 4.73

My Rating: 10,000 - tied with my favorite Mt. Shasta home

Quick Facts:

  • Location - Lake County, CA. About 2.5 hours north of the Bay, just east of Ukiah.

  • 2 Bedrooms with 3 beds and 2 baths, up to 6 guests total (it was just two of us and the house felt HUGE).

  • Cost: $199/night - for all that ^^ space! v reasonable.

  • Private beach with lake access, two-person kayak and paddleboat on property.

  • TWO decks.

  • Right next to a mini-farm house with miniature horses and the friendliest dog you'll ever meet.

  • NO WIFI - this was actually a very nice addition to the trip.

  • The town of Clear Lake itself is...interesting. Very rural vibe, a few Trump signs spotted around town. The lake houses are a 20 minute drive from the towns and completely removed - it's the same county but an entirely different world.

What we did:

  • Floated, swam, floated, swam, sunbathed.

  • Kayaked thrice - twice during the days and one magical sunset ride.

  • Took the pedal boat out on windy waters and pedaled harder than a spin class to get back.

  • Got chased out of the water with our floaties by two geese who DID NOT like the look of the pink flamingo and unicorn floats.

  • Met the neighbors incredibly big and friendly pup.

  • Played cornhole and every other game we could find in the house (which was a lot).

  • Watched some very old DVD's as that was the only thing available. Revisited Signs, still a pretty great movie.

  • Lots of bird watching.

  • Did all my laundry.

  • Didn't leave the house until the last day- we stayed 4 days and 3 nights.

If I had to complain about one thing:

  • It was very buggy, but we WERE on the lake in the heat, so not really the houses fault. We were also the first guests in a while, so understandable.
